Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi (AV), May 29, 2025 – A 12th-century masterpiece is reborn through technology. Irpinia-based 3DRap Factory, which specializes in producing custom PLASTIC and RUBBER components without molds, has created a faithful 3D-printed reproduction of the bas-relief depicting William of Vercelli in collaboration with the Irpinia 7x Association, Goleto Abbey, the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, digital artist Metta Borriello and Professor Nello Antonio Valentino.
The original work, one of the very few visual depictions of the Saint, was stolen after the 1980 earthquake, following its removal from the abbey’s façade for restoration work. Its whereabouts have been unknown ever since.
In the heart of Irpinia, where spirituality and history have been intertwined for centuries, 3DRap has brought back to life the 13th-century bas-relief depicting William of Vercelli, founder of Goleto Abbey and the renowned monastery of Montevergine. The original work, a 90 cm stone sculpture made around 1200 and attributed to Maestro Orso, was reproduced through meticulous digital reconstruction using the polymodelling technique and archival photographs.
The official handover of the work took place on May 26 in the presence of 3DRap CEO Beniamino Izzo and co-founder Domenico Orsi, who entrusted the reproduction to architect Angelo Verderosa, head of the Cammino di Guglielmo project. The bas-relief will be an integral part of the new Goleto Multimedia Museum, which will open on May 30 during the Second Forum of Historical-Religious Routes.
At the museum, visitors will be able to enjoy an immersive experience combining virtual reality, visual exhibitions and NFC interaction along a journey exploring the Saint’s life and the site’s spiritual legacy.
The Abbey will also be a key stop on the Cammino di Guglielmo, a cultural and spiritual route passing through 15 locations in Irpinia and attracting visitors from across Italy and around the world each year.
