Small-Batch Plastic and Rubber Components: When Mold-Free Production Makes Sense

When a company needs to produce technical plastic and rubber components in small or medium quantities, making a mold is not always the most cost-effective option. Upfront costs, tooling lead times and the need to revise a component quickly can make mold-free digital production an attractive option.

3DRap Factory uses additive manufacturing to produce plastic and rubber components in batches, starting from a digital model without building a dedicated mold.

Why avoid a mold for small production runs

Injection molding is essential for high-volume production, but it requires a mold to be designed and manufactured. For smaller quantities, that investment has to be spread across fewer parts.

Additive manufacturing removes this step: the component is made directly from the digital file. This makes it possible to start production without the upfront cost of a mold and simplifies changes to geometries and variants.

When mold-free production makes sense

It is particularly useful when you need:

• small or medium production runs;
• custom components;
• geometries that change frequently;
• replacement parts and technical components;
• production volumes that do not justify a dedicated mold.

Following a technical assessment, this approach can be used for brackets, housings, spacers, guards, inserts, automation components, tooling, and packaging and logistics parts and many other industrial components.

From digital file to production run

The process begins with a 3D model of the component. Once its geometry, material and application requirements have been assessed, a sample can be produced before moving on to the full batch.

Changes to the digital model also allow the component to be updated without modifying or rebuilding a mold.

Different materials for different requirements

The choice depends on the application. Among other materials, 3DRap Factory works with PLA, PETG, ASA and flexible TPU materials, as well as ESD solutions for applications requiring electrostatic dissipation. Material, geometry and process are assessed according to the component being produced.
