Obviously, it is not always advisable to buy a new steering wheel or pedal set (especially if you have just purchased it). To avoid this kind of waste, various companies allow you to upgrade your peripheral with simple mods.
To help you understand what these mods can really and effectively do, we asked the team at 3DRAP to give us an overview of what can be achieved with this type of solution.

Let’s start with pedal sets: what makes the difference between a lifeless pedal set and one that delivers a sense of realism is the brake pedal.
It must be well calibrated, heavy and, above all, progressive… the further I press it, the stiffer it becomes. You need to be able to reach the braking zone and literally stamp on it to manage the load transfer required for the car to turn into the corner, while at the same time ensuring that the pressure does not lock the front wheels and make you overshoot.
The brake pedal MOD allows you to manage this type of braking (especially with your left foot) and avoid lockups throughout the entire simulation session. Significant improvements can also be felt in situations where you only need to brush the brake with your foot to better balance the car through a fast corner or a change of direction… being able to press hard and release gradually, without the risk of pushing too far, is essential.
Now let’s move on to the H-pattern shifter: there is a difference between an arcade shifter and the gearbox of a sports car. Gear engagement must be precise, instantaneous and firm… once you have moved the lever in the right direction, the shifter itself should pull your hand along with it, almost as if to say: I understand where you want to go; I’ll take it from here!
Disengagement is also a matter of coordination between your arm and the selector fork desperately trying to release the synchronizer. You must be ready and decisive when changing gear; otherwise, the car will respond poorly.
The H-pattern shifter MOD is designed to emulate this engaging sensation, which only a few true motorsport enthusiasts will fully appreciate, but which completely transforms the way you drive in the simulator: greater concentration and greater emotional involvement.
Finally, let me tell you about AddON steering wheels: we develop steering wheels for two reasons… first and foremost, there is the aesthetic aspect, which is for everyone… simulating a Formula 1 car with a Formula 1 steering wheel is priceless… it draws you in, and your simulation experience gains many points.
But as a second reason, there is a more technical aspect that, as above, more skilled drivers appreciate: it is important to use the right steering wheel for each car.
This is especially true in simulators, where the vehicle dynamics provide all their information in real time through FFB. A lighter steering wheel rim results in greater sensitivity and more accurate force feedback response.
Increasing the diameter of a steering wheel provides greater control of the car, but a slower reaction speed (suitable for medium-to-large cars: GT, Drift and Road Cars).
By reducing the diameter of a steering wheel, you can react more quickly to the car’s movements, but you need to be much more precise with corrections (suitable for medium-to-small, lightweight cars: Formula, Sport and LM).
The size and geometry of the steering wheel can be calibrated to amplify the signals sent by the car to the driver’s hands during oversteer, for example, allowing the driver to react sooner and more effectively to regain control.
