Design, relaxation and recycling. Dune, 3DRap’s hemp lamp, is born.
What could an empty spool be used for? To support Dune, quite literally. Dune is a ceiling or table lamp by 3DRap. Its cylinder is made of HBP, a material derived from industrial hemp processing waste mixed with a PLA base. And it rests on a piece of an empty filament spool: the part around which the filament is wound and which, once the filament has run out, becomes the base of the lamp holder. The spools are made by Eumakers, which designed them with interlocking parts specifically to enable creative reuse.
Hemp Filament and Material Benefits
Returning to the composition of Dune’s cylindrical lamp holder, “the hemp filament used is a compostable raw material of entirely natural origin,” explained designer Adriano D’Elia, who designed the model together with Rossana Afeltra. “Compared with conventional PLA, the kind usually used in 3D printers, it has a much lower density, greater elasticity and tensile strength, as well as better adhesion and cohesion between the layers of material at the molecular level, thanks to its particular composition.”
Hemp is an ancient material whose new potential is discovered every day. Used in a range of sectors, from green building, bioplastics and biofuels to textiles and cosmetics, it is now also among the materials used by 3DRap.
Dune’s Sand-Inspired Design and Sensory Experience
The filament is a wood-like brown, with a surface color that can vary slightly depending on the extrusion temperature. It is a warm color close to that of sand—an element echoed in the design’s flowing contours. Dune’s soft yet well-defined curves evoke sand shaped by the wind. In the lamp, these forms are accentuated by the interplay of light and shadow created by the alternating ridges and hollows on its cylindrical surface.
For the eyes, Dune’s shape is certainly the first element that invites relaxation. This can become a truly sensory experience with the use of an incandescent bulb, whose yellow light and heat create a pleasant warmth and atmosphere. The experience also involves the sense of smell: prolonged warmth allows the material to release a subtle yet intoxicating scent of hemp.
