We are happy to announce that 3DRap.it is once again the official sponsor of the exhibition organized by Federarchitetti Italia at the Technology Hub fair, taking place from April 20 to 22 at Fiera Milano City. For the occasion, we will bring our Poly, the first biodegradable battery-powered 3D printer. We used it to prototype a lamp designed by Gennaro Russo, which has now reached the final stage of development, culminating in an online crowdfunding campaign.
Below is the official statement from Federarchitetti:
Federarchitetti is once again endorsing and participating in Technology Hub, organized by Ente Fiera di Milano from April 20 to 22, 2017, with a focus on “Self-production and product customization through 3D printers” and “Augmented reality to support the development of the cultural heritage sector”.
Promotion, distribution and sales have always been the most formidable obstacles for young designers. This has led to the rediscovery of a once seemingly unfashionable way of making design objects: self-production.
For just over a decade, this new way of producing objects that are part of our daily lives has been gaining momentum among architects, designers, creatives, artisans and others, who manage the entire process from design and production through to marketing the finished object.
In recent years, Federarchitetti has come into contact with some of those working in the sector and has become convinced that a new way of producing is emerging, given that traditional industry has not been able to respond fully to new market demand. For this reason, Federarchitetti decided to bring this new phenomenon to light. Starting in several cities in southern Italy, it took part in the Salone del Mobile and Technology Hub in Milan in 2016, offering self-producers a showcase to introduce their products to the public.
The development of 3D printers is helping to spread a new approach to making products for end users. It may even allow buyers to produce an object themselves (either directly or by using printing services) and choose the color and material from which it is made.
Last year at Technology Hub, together with Fabbricando, we presented the work of a designer who used a reclaimed material (wood) to make a shelf, employing 3D printing technology to add the material needed for its intended function. This year, instead, we will present the work of another architect-designer who uses 3D printers to make a decorative lamp with a small portable 3D printer. An architect-designer who has created a jewelry collection through 3D printing will also be there.
Two 3D printers will be at the fair. One will make the lamp and show visitors that it can be produced on request with a structure made of PLA, resin, copper, iron, ceramic and other materials, allowing them to choose their preferred color. The other, a portable 3D printer that also runs on batteries and was created for small-scale, even private use, will make small 4x4x4 cm modules that, thanks to the designer’s ingenuity, will become integral parts of large furnishing pieces.
Another theme Federarchitetti is bringing to the Milan fair on April 20–22 is “Augmented reality to support the development of the cultural heritage sector”. Through the work of an engineer and an architect, visitors will be able to see an augmented-reality reconstruction of a famous monument’s architectural and decorative elements as they were several millennia ago. This new technology, which makes 3D images possible, will amaze viewers, transporting them back through the centuries as though in a time machine.
