Recently, unispinergy.com contacted us to 3D-print a prototype for a very interesting project.
UNISPINERGY.COM is a nonprofit company founded in early 2012 as a spin-off from the research activities of CRAS – the Aerospace Research Center at Sapienza University of Rome. It works in data-processing software for specialized applications, from medical imaging (X-rays) to remote sensing, telecommunications, and renewable energy.
Its main statutory aims are to serve the public good through research, cultural services, and university education.
The project the company is working on, called “Smart Field” and coordinated by engineer Roberto Giusto, involves an intelligent management system for a photovoltaic installation that can recover much of the energy lost due to factors such as shading, dirt, and aging photovoltaic cells.

The issue for which our advice was requested concerned making IP67-certified watertight boxes to house the system’s electronic components. Initially, they had selected commercially available aluminum-alloy boxes, manufactured at low cost in the Far East and widely used to house cable-TV amplifiers.

But that solution did not meet the project’s cost requirements, which were very tight given that it was still at the prototype stage. So, using our printer’s FDM technology, we were able to make custom prototype covers to fit a very low-cost aluminum profile produced and supplied by the Italian company Pandolfo Alluminio S.p.A.

The small pre-production run is planned in aluminum alloy using sand casting, while the production run will use permanent-mold casting.
