3D-Printed Car Parts: 3DRap Enters the Automotive Industry

The innovation of 3D printing meets the past—and, in particular, two four-wheeled legends. After their success in Sim Racing, 3DRap’s printers are entering the automotive industry with the production of replacement parts for two classic Fiat models: the 1980 127 Sport and the 1982 Panda 30.

For the first, 3DRap made the dashboard fascia using PLA with high thermomechanical performance. It also combined laser cutting with 3D printing to make the transparent polycarbonate panel for the tachometer and speedometer.

For the Panda 30, the Mercogliano-based startup redesigned and printed the FIAT logo. Because it sits on the outside of the car and is constantly exposed to the elements, the logo was made from ABS, a material widely used in the automotive industry for its mechanical properties and ease of processing.

“The production of these parts using FDM technology,” explained mechanical engineer Antonio De Stefano, who designed and redesigned the replacement parts for additive manufacturing, “was made possible through reverse engineering. We also used photogrammetry, a service 3DRap offers when reproducing an object’s shape with conventional CAD is more difficult.”

Finding replacement car parts, even for classic models, is no longer so difficult thanks to 3D printing. The technology is working ever more closely with the automotive industry, where it is taking on a central role—not only as a prototyping tool, but also in the production of interior components or functional exterior parts. 3DRap, for example, already has new motorsport partnerships lined up.

Faster design times, competitive costs, and the production of precise, durable parts. Less waste material and the ability to customize components, too. Perhaps one day entire cars will be 3D-printed. For now, anyone who owns a 1980s 127 Sport or Panda 30 knows how to find these two 3DRap replacement parts easily and without excessive expense. For any other replacement parts, customers can contact the company through the Create platform.
